About Empowering Kids
We are a program providing a range of services specializing in autism and ADHD in our rural Minnesota community. Our vision is to provide a life of hope, happiness, dignity, and purpose for neurodiverse individuals and their families.

Our Mission
To empower children, families, and the community by providing support and resources to those with autism or social challenges.

Our Vision
To provide a life of hope, happiness, dignity, and purpose.

Our Founders
Kim & Kenny Nelson
Kim’s personal experience with autism began within her own family and their endless search for services that are not available in rural communities. Because of her special vision, passion, and determination, Empowering Kids is now providing support to neurodiverse individuals and their families right here in Perham and the surrounding area.
Read Kim’s personal letter to families on why Empowering Kids means so much to her and her family.
Our Team
The neurodiverse population that we serve have special interests, sensory regulation tools and life hacks when navigating a neurotypical world. To represent the uniqueness of those profiles and our own neurodiverse staff, we share a little about our own individualized profiles.

Special Interests: Listening to songs repeatedly until I memorize the lyrics, puzzles, and playing/joking
Sensory Regulation Supports: Super hot bath with jets, weighted blanket, talking/singing, and listening to/moving to music
Sensory Aversions: Dirty feeling teeth, wet clothes, dirt, sticky hands, and sand in my toes
Life Hacks: Mornings are usually when I’m the most dysregulated so I set up an environment to support getting out of bed. I make my breakfast and eat it while sitting on the floor in my bathroom, in front of my wall heater, while I watch Tik Toks

Sensory Regulation Supports: Wearing hoodies and putting my hood up, listening to music, ear plugs or using my AirPods to block out noise, swinging in my hammock, cocooning myself in blankets
Sensory Aversions: Complex noises, tight shirts, placing any part of my body in or drinking room temperature or slightly warm water, being cold, anything crawling on me
Life Hacks: Buy all the same color socks so you don’t have to match them and do laundry loads for each person individually or sort through laundry.

Sensory Regulation Supports: Fidgeting, tapping along to the music in my head, music/white noise, making lists, deep and intentional breaths with a heavy and somewhat obnoxious sigh
Sensory Aversions: Competing electronic sounds, feeling damp, sawdust, when my hair feels heavy
Life Hacks: I really enjoy getting two things done at once. For example, let the shower warm up while I feed my dog or floss while I drive home from work.

Montessori Preschool Coordinator
Chelsey Hendrickx (she/her/hers)
- Master of Science in Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis in Literacy
- Basic DIR Floortime Practitioner
Special Interests: Creating items for the classroom, baking/cooking shows, baking, and collecting books.
Sensory Regulation Supports: Rocking, swaying, ear plugs, and reading.
Sensory Aversions: Wet socks, loud sharp noises (different than loud music), food aversions like yogurt, textures like sandpaper.
Life Hacks: I like to make sure I am well-regulated before I go to sleep so I can feel refreshed in the morning. I do that by winding down each night by packing my lunch which helps me avoid my food aversions, setting out my clothes for the next day, and then reading in my bed. I also purchased an alarm clock that slowly lights up my room to help me naturally come awake instead of a loud alarm.

-
Special Interests: Anything that has to do with creating such as arranging flowers, painting, drawing, throwing clay - you name it, I like to create with it.
-
Sensory Regulation Supports: Being in silence and having a blanket whenever I’m sitting down to relax
-
Sensory Aversions: Wet grass, being sticky, slimy food, and too much physical touch from my own children
-
Life Hacks: Always chase your dreams even when they seem impossible. Your current struggle with always be worth it in the end. Stay busy, stay focused, and embrace chaos. With that, it is also okay to not be okay sometimes and to just be, for as long as you need.

Tessa Fenu
Operations Support Specialist | she/her/hers
- Special Interests: Wildlife conservation is my jam. I love creatures like tarantulas, snakes, and millipedes that are not usually anthropomorphized by most people, and I enjoy educating them on the importance of those animals. Anything that is really environment-encompassing is interesting to me.
- Sensory Regulation Supports: Blasting tunes in my vehicle while taking a long drive helps me boost my mood when I am feeling upset, tired, or sad. When I am unable to do this I like to let my dog lay her entire body on me like a weighted blanket. She lives for those days!
- Sensory Aversions: I am very sensitive to certain smells and liquids. So much so that they can activate my gag reflex. Great examples of this are sweat, earthworms, bad breath, and anything bodily fluid related. The funny thing is, I can handle many of these when it comes to animals, but I cannot handle them when it comes to people!
- Life Hacks: One thing that helps me to mentally prepare for the day is to start off with an iced coffee. I love a good chocolate-based iced coffee in the morning. Combining caffeine with my favorite flavor is never a bad idea. Also, snuggling up with my pooch at night helps to melt away any stresses I've accumulated over the day.
Erin Friedsam
EIDBI Provider | she/her/hers
- Special Interests: Family time, puzzles, embroidery, learning new things and anything organizing scheduling
- Sensory Regulation Supports: Quiet dark room, comfort TV shows, stretching and cold/cool environments
- Sensory Aversions: Chewing or drinking loudly, unexpected loud or obnoxious noises, tight or uncomfortable clothing, too much physical contact, and small talk.
- Life Hacks: Looking for the positives in a situation. It's okay to be upset with someone or a situation but finding a way to work through it and learning something when doing so will teach you more than just being upset. Everyone is different but that doesn't mean we can't all get along and enjoy each others' company!

- Sensory Regulation Supports: Old Christmas songs (ex. Frank Sinatra & Bing Crosby), cleaning my house with my favorite songs blasting, irritating my husband, calling my mom, hiding in my room, under my blanket with my pillow on my head
